There is a high incidence of ankle sprains among military personnel. Poor recovery usually leads to the injury becoming chronic and recurrent. The Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV) has used the Kinemov/IBV movement analysis application to study the functionality of the ankle in military personnel with a history of sprains from the Military Emergency Unit (UME). When comparing the kinematics of the injured ankle to that of a healthy ankle during a single-leg jump, we have found a limitation of plantar flexion in the phase prior to landing. This finding would indicate the existence of functional sequelae in ankles that have in theory experienced a full recovery. The results of the study show that the information provided by a motion study could help to identify functional alterations of the ankle, point the way towards a better recovery, and avoid future problems.

Los esguinces de tobillo tienen una incidencia elevada en personal militar. Una mala recuperación conduce habitualmente a una cronicidad de la lesión y a recidivas. El Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV) ha utilizado la aplicación de análisis de movimientos Kinemov/IBV para estudiar la funcionalidad del tobillo en militares de la Unidad Militar de Emergencia (UME) con antecedentes de esguinces. Al comparar la cinemática del tobillo lesionado con el sano en un salto monopodal se ha encontrado una limitación de la flexión plantar en la fase previa al apoyo. Este hallazgo indicaría la existencia de secuelas funcionales en tobillos teóricamente recuperados. Los resultados del estudio muestran que la información proporcionada por un estudio de movimientos podría ayudar a identificar alteraciones funcionales del tobillo y orientar una mejor recuperación y evitar problemas futuros.

The Master’s Degree in Clinical Biomechanical Assessment was created in 2014 as a result of collaboration between the Universitat Politècnica de Valencia (UPV) and the Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV). Six editions and 220 students later, we look back to reflect on and assess the aspects that have made it possible for us to continue to be a benchmark in quality biomechanical training, at home and abroad.
