The Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV) is at the forefront of the digital technology for the anthropometric and biomechanical characterization of the human body thanks to the development of MOVE 4D, a high-precision and rapid scanning system for the body in motion. This system opens up new options for the advancement and development in such varied sectors as clothing, textiles, biomechanical assessment in health and sport, digital animation or video games.

The Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV) has carried out a study that quantifies the precision and validity of 3D foot scanning technology using a smartphone, as developed by the IBV, compared with traditional methodologies such as manual measurements and other commercial solutions currently on the market. The results confirm that the IBV technology is as precise as the reference solution, much more reliable than manual measurements performed by an expert, and offers great opportunities for application in economic sectors where the possibility of scanning anywhere and at low cost are important for deployment and scalability.

Preliminary results of the InKreate project

The main goal of the InKreate Project (https://www.inkreate.eu/) is to facilitate fashion design development (idea to technical details) and decision-making process by creating a software solution uniquely adapted to the needs of the fashion industry.

The InKreate tool will include four main features that will distinguish it from existing CAD/CAM (Computer-aided design and Manufacturing) solutions: Designers will be able to design directly over a 3D body shape, including actual body scan, statistically derived template body or 3D avatar model created in a third-party software; Design process will be a combination of shape manipulation and intuitive sketching; The tool will integrate preliminary design cost analysis; The interface will allow designers to manage design collections as well as their ideas. MADE IN ME (www.madeinmeshoes.com) is a company dedicated to the sale of footwear designed by the actual client, in accordance with their tastes and preferences. Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV) has developed for this company a new size allocator for women’s shoes based on the anthropometry of the female population of Spain. The allocator has also been customized for the different models of footwear that the company sells.
