On February 13th 2020 professionals and experts on frailty met in Lisboa during the first Fall-In-Age multiplier event.

Its main objective was the presentation of the Fall-in-Age project to possible stakeholders.

“Fall-In-Age course contents are ready and we will launch the trial very soon” states Project Director Miguel Tavares da Silva.

The event included a discussion panel entitled “The role of the technology on the assessment of frailty and falls risk. Where we are”, which concluded with an open debate moderated by Miguel da Silva where participants interacted with experts.

In the round table there were also Miguel Lemos (CEO Aces Arco Ribeirinho), Maria de Jesús Costa (CTO da Domus Vida de Lisboa), Énio Pestana (Physiatrist, Hospital CUF Cascais) and Vera Moniz Pereira (Assistant Professor, Faculdade de Motricidade Humana, Universidade de Lisboa).

The event also included a workshop focused on solutions for evaluation of frailty and falls risk developed by the project partners.

IBV’s Market Director Alfonso Oltra participated in the event presenting some biomechanical assessment portable tools developed by IBV and addressed to frailty, such as the innovative FallSkip system (www.fallskip.com). “The system uses an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) integrated in a portable console, which analyses the biomechanical response when performing a modified protocol of the Timed up and Go Test (TGU)”, says Oltra. “It stems from the IBV´s wide experience from over 40 years innovating in the fields of healthcare technologies & elderly people”, he continues.

“We think that the turnout was really good and we are most satisfied with the contacts and discussion that we had with all the participants” concludes Da Silva.

Fall in Age is a project of the ERASMUS + program that aims to develop and implement a digital course for students, specialists and health professionals. The course focuses on the use of technology-based tools to assess the frailty and risk of falls in the elderly population.

The Fall in Age Project results from the collaboration between the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) and the Faculty of Human Motricity (FMH) of the University of Lisbon (ULisboa) with the Instituto de Biomecánica de Valencia (IBV), with the Istituto Nazionale di Riposo and Cura per Anziani (INRCA) and with the European General Practice Research Network (EGPRN).

Netx scheduled events will be the participation in the EPGRN conference in Gotheborg (May) and the Wonca Europe congress in Berlin (June)”.
