Two Horizon 2020 proposals coordinated by Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV), which include several EIT Health partners in their consortia, have been selected for funding in 2017 calls.

Since the beginning of EIT Health, Instituto de Biomecánica (IBV), a Core Partner in CLC Spain, is looking for collaboration with other EIT Health partners both inside and outside the KIC calls. For that reason, additionally to actively participating in EIT Health calls, IBV is implementing the strategy of inviting EIT Health partners to Horizon 2020 proposals. This means starting collaboration with other KIC partners in research and innovation projects that can be further developed and continued within EIT Health calls through new innovation, education and/or acceleration activities.

This strategy has demonstrated to be successful so far, as the two proposals coordinated by IBV and submitted to Horizon 2020 calls in 2017 have been selected for funding (a 100% success rate). EIT Health Network++ and recent matchmaking activities have made possible IBV to connect and meet several EIT Health partners to jointly apply and succeed in Horizon 2020 calls. The two funded Horizon 2020 projects are Back-UP and BodyPass.

The Back-UP consortium will receive €5.13 million from the EU in 3 years to create a prognostic model to underpin more efficient management of neck and low back pain based on the digital representation of multidimensional clinical information and on simulations of the outcomes of possible interventions.

Back-Up

Back-UP will provide benefits to clinicians, employers, insurance companies and patients and will create a channel for sharing information during the rehabilitation and return to work processes. 4 out of 13 (31%) Back-UP partners are EIT Health members: IBV (Back-UP leader), GMV (Associate Partner in CLC Spain), Karolinska Institutet (Core Partner in CLC Scandinavia), and University of Keele which is linked third party of West Midlands Academic Health Science Network (Core Partner in CLC United Kingdom-Ireland). EU contribution allocated to EIT Health partners is € 1.48 million (29% of Back-UP total EU contribution).

Body Pass

The BodyPass project aims to break barriers between health and consumer goods sectors and to eliminate the current data silos. The main objective is to foster exchange, linking and re-use, as well as to integrate 3D data assets from the two sectors. For this, BodyPass will adapt and create tools that allow a secure exchange of information between data owners, companies and subjects (patients and customers). BodyPass total budget is € 3.11 million in 3 years, and partners will receive € 2.55 million from the EU. 3 out of 7 (43%) BodyPass partners are EIT Health members: IBV (BodyPass coordinator), Atos Spain (Core Partner in CLC Spain), and Philips Electronics Nederland (Core Partner in CLC Belgium-Netherlands). EU contribution allocated to EIT Health partners is € 1.68 million (66% of BodyPass total EU contribution).

Back-UP and BodyPass projects will receive funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreements No 777090 and 779780, respectively.

IBV is very proud of these successful results in Horizon 2020, and encourages all EIT Health partners to jointly explore collaboration opportunities both inside and outside the KIC.
