In allocating the resources of the Fundación para la Prevención de Riesgos Laborales (IS-0299/2012, IS-0301/2012 and IS 0303/2012), the CEOPAN, FEAGRA-CCOO and FITAG-UGT, with the support of the IBV, an agency specializing in ergonomics and occupational health, have developed a project whose main result has been the development of the game “ErgoPan” to train and raise awareness in workers in the bakery industry. ErgoPan is a serious game and is tailored to working conditions in the industry to facilitate learning how to prevent ergonomic hazards.

INTRODUCTION

In 2011, the CEOPAN, FEAGRA-CCOO, FITAG-UGT and IBV developed the Manual for technical advice on the prevention of ergonomic hazards in the bakery industry with help from the FPRL (IS-0099/2010). This project provided a simple, quick and participatory tool for evaluating ergonomic hazards.

In 2012, the same organizations developed a set of audio-visual resources, based on testimonials and simulations in actual work environments that were available through a web portal (panaderia.ibv.org) and mobile applications, in order to shed light on ergonomic hazards that workers face and good practices and resources that can be used for minimizing these hazards.

Following on this work, and in order to improve workers' knowledge, we set out to create attractive and motivating tools that get workers involved in resolving the difficulty of making training and work schedules compatible. In 2013, the Confederación Española de Organizaciones de Panadería (CEOPAN) and the union federations FEAGRA-CCOO and FITAG-UGT, with support from the Instituto de Biomecánica de Valencia (IBV), developed the project entitled “Interactive multimedia content to inform about and raise awareness of the prevention of occupational hazards in the bakery industry.” This project was developed as part of the support provided by the FPRL -IS Actions- IS-0299/2012, IS-0301/2012 and IS 0303/2012.

DEVELOPMENT

Completing this project required a comprehensive industry study to be conducted beforehand on related positions, tasks, etc. to create training material that, after the field studies, were transformed into serious games based on actual working conditions in bakeries.

The projectresulted in a set of interactive games that reproduce hazards identified in bakeries, particularly ergonomic hazards. Each game consists of audio-visual material (videos, images, etc.), a question and a series of answers on the situation shown (multiple choice, matching images, true/false, etc.). In addition, a logical learning process was used to develop the games. Each of the 50-odd games included in the application provides workers with further information/feedback to reinforce learning and make the message clear to all the workers.

The games cover a wide range of content, including all the important aspects of ergonomic hazards in the industry, such as lifting loads, identifying improper or awkward postures for specific tasks, repetitive movements, injuries, disorders, etc.

CONCLUSIONS

The final result of the project has been the creation of a website (ergopan.ibv.org) containing the training games developed in this project.

In addition, a new tool has been added to the websitepanaderia.ibv.org to allow quick access to all the multimedia related to the bakery industry.

To ensure that this new information and training tool is used by as many people as possible, the game may be played on iOS and Android mobile devices. It is free to download on Google Play and from Apple's App Store by simply entering the ErgoPan application name.

The website and mobile applications available are an ideal way to disseminate information and training on the prevention of ergonomic hazards in the industry, providing access to specific materials for business owners, risk-prevention experts, trainers and workers.    l

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

We would like to thank the companies in the industry who have contributed to the project by providing information and allowing field studies to be conducted at their facilities.
